  • Turn the system off and let it thaw. This comes first, always. Switch the AC off at the thermostat (or set it to “fan only” to speed thawing) and let the ice melt completely. It can take a few hours. Running the system while it’s frozen strains the compressor, the most expensive part in the whole system, and you won’t get any cooling anyway until the coil is clear.
  • Check and change the air filter. A clogged filter is the number-one cause we find. When the filter chokes off airflow, not enough warm air reaches the coil, it gets too cold, and it freezes. If your filter is dirty, replace it, and in a Florida summer, check it monthly.

  • Look at the outdoor unit. If the condenser coils outside are caked with dirt, grass clippings, or debris, the system can’t shed heat properly, which throws off the whole refrigerant cycle. Gently rinse it with a garden hose (power off first) and pull weeds and leaves away from it.

If the coil thaws, you replace the filter, open the vents, and it cools normally again. Great, you’ve solved it. Keep an eye on it for a day or two. If it freezes up again, stop and call a tech. A repeat freeze almost always means a deeper problem.
